Are you seeing more wasps buzzing around your home or business this summer? You’re not the only one.
After a noticeably quiet wasp season in 2024, things are taking a sharp turn in 2025. With the recent heatwave pushing temperatures above 30°C in parts of the South West — including Swindon, Salisbury, and Chippenham — we’re seeing a clear spike in wasp activity across Wiltshire.
Why are wasps more active during a heatwave?
Wasp populations are highly influenced by weather. Warm, dry conditions like those we’ve seen recently allow:
- Faster nest construction
- Greater survival rates for queens
- More aggressive and early worker wasp behaviour
This combination leads to a surge in nest sightings and wasp-related call-outs, earlier in the summer than usual.
What we’re seeing across Wiltshire:
The ASW Pest Control team has responded to a growing number of wasp reports in towns including Trowbridge, Marlborough, Devizes, and Warminster. Here’s what we’ve observed:
- Active nests in lofts, wall cavities, garages and sheds
- A rise in call-outs starting as early as mid-June
- Faster nest growth and more defensive behaviour from wasps
After a quieter 2024, this year’s heat may be triggering a high-pressure pest season — especially for homeowners and businesses with outdoor spaces.
Signs of a wasp nest to watch out for:
If you’re seeing more wasps than usual, here are some tell-tale signs of a nearby nest:
- Wasps flying in and out of the same gap or opening
- A faint buzzing sound from inside a wall or roof
- A visible papery nest in an outbuilding, loft, or eaves
Don’t take risks, call a professional
Trying to remove or disturb a wasp nest yourself can be dangerous, particularly during the peak of the season when nests are large and wasps are highly territorial.
ASW Pest Control offers fast, discreet and safe wasp control for both domestic and commercial clients throughout Wiltshire.
