Bee Control and Removal:

Bee Control and Removal:

When people discover a swarm of bees or notice increased bee activity around their property, their first reaction is often concern. However, bees are some of the most important insects in our environment and play a vital role in pollinating plants, crops, and flowers.

We take a responsible approach to bee control and removal. As registered beekeepers ourselves, we understand the importance of protecting bee populations while helping homeowners and businesses resolve concerns safely and effectively.

Why Bees Are Important

Bees are responsible for pollinating many of the fruits, vegetables, and plants that we rely on every day. Without healthy bee populations, our food production and local ecosystems would be significantly affected.

Unlike wasps, bees are generally non-aggressive insects and will usually only sting if they feel threatened. In many cases, what appears to be a problem is simply a temporary swarm looking for a new place to establish a colony.

What Should You Do If You Find a Bee Swarm?

If you notice a large cluster of bees hanging from a tree, fence, shrub, or building, it is often a swarm. While this can look alarming, swarming is a natural part of the honey bee life cycle.

During this process, thousands of worker bees leave an existing hive with a queen and temporarily gather together while scout bees search for a new home.

The most important thing to do is remain calm and avoid disturbing them. Swarms are often at their least aggressive during this stage and can frequently be relocated safely.

Our Approach to Bee Removal

Our priority is always to preserve the colony wherever possible. When attending a bee-related callout, our experienced team will:

  • Identify the species involved
  • Assess the location and accessibility of the colony or swarm
  • Determine whether relocation is possible
  • Work with local beekeeping networks where appropriate
  • Provide practical advice to property owners

Where swarms are accessible, we can often safely remove and relocate them, protecting both the bees and your property.

Understanding Different Types of Bees

There are several types of bees commonly seen across Wiltshire and the South West.

Honey Bees

Honey bees are typically dark brown or pale orange in colour and live in large colonies. Most honey bee colonies are managed by local beekeepers, although swarms may occasionally settle temporarily in gardens or around buildings.

Bumblebees

Bumblebees are larger, noticeably hairier, and often have brightly coloured markings. They commonly nest in tree cavities, old rodent burrows, compost heaps, and sheltered areas of gardens.

Only female bumblebees survive through winter hibernation, while the rest of the colony naturally dies off at the end of the season.

Are Bees Dangerous?

While bees are capable of stinging, they are not generally aggressive insects.

Worker honey bees can only sting once, as their barbed stinger becomes lodged in the skin. The bee will die shortly afterwards. Queen bees can sting multiple times but rarely do so.

Most bee stings occur when bees are accidentally trapped, stepped on, or disturbed near their nest.

When to Call a Professional

If bees are nesting in a wall cavity, roof space, chimney, or another area where they may pose a risk to people, it is important to seek professional advice before attempting to remove them yourself.

Incorrect treatment can damage colonies unnecessarily and may create additional problems within the property.

Our team can identify the species involved and recommend the safest and most appropriate solution.
