Gull Breeding Season Has Started

Every year, as we move into spring, gull activity begins to increase across the UK. By April, many gulls have already started identifying nesting sites. Rooftops, ledges, and solar panels quickly become attractive spaces, particularly in towns and cities where food is readily available and natural nesting areas are limited.

For many homeowners and businesses, the first real sign of a problem doesn’t come later. The noise picks up, birds become more defensive, and suddenly there are chicks on the roof. At that point, it’s not just inconvenient, it’s much harder to resolve, making it an important time to consider your gull control and prevention set up.

When Is Gull Breeding Season?

Gull breeding season in the UK typically runs from April through to July. It tends to follow a fairly predictable pattern. Early in the season, gulls are pairing up and testing potential nesting spots. Not long after, eggs are laid, and by early summer, chicks are active and being fiercely protected by adult birds.

During this time, gulls are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In simple terms, once nests are in use, they cannot usually be removed or disturbed without a licence. That’s why timing is so important to ensure you have a bird proofing plan in place.

A couple of gulls on the roof doesn’t always feel urgent. But gulls are creatures of habit. If they find a safe, undisturbed space, they’ll return to it and they’ll bring others with them over time. By the time the situation becomes disruptive, with noise, mess, or aggressive behaviour, they’re already established. And once they’re nesting, your options narrow very quickly.

The Impact of Gull Activity

Gulls can very quickly go from background noise to a daily frustration. For businesses, we often see it start to affect the day-to-day. Staff avoid certain areas, customers notice the mess, and entrances or outdoor spaces become less pleasant to use. Over time, it can even start to impact how a business is perceived.

At home, it’s usually more personal. Early morning noise, interrupted sleep, and the constant awareness of birds overhead can become wearing, especially during peak season when they’re most active. It’s rarely just a minor issue once it takes hold.

Why Acting Now Makes All the Difference

Right now is the window where you can actually get ahead of the problem. Gulls are still choosing where to settle. They’re exploring, testing spaces, and deciding where they feel safe enough to nest. If something changes at this stage, if access is restricted or areas are made less appealing, they’ll simply move on.

Once they’ve committed, though, that flexibility disappears. This is why preventative bird proofing is so much more effective than trying to resolve things later in the season.

How We Can Help

Our focus is always on long-term prevention rather than short-term fixes. If you’re already seeing activity, or you’ve had issues in previous years, we can assess your property and recommend practical, effective solutions. This might involve installing netting to protect larger areas, adding spikes to prevent perching, or proofing around solar panels where gulls often nest unnoticed.

You can find more information about our approach to gull control and for a broader look at preventative solutions and proofing options. Every property is different, so the approach is always tailored, but the goal is the same, to stop the problem before it starts.

Advice or Support?

If you’re starting to notice gull activity now, or you’ve dealt with the same issue in the past, it’s worth taking a closer look sooner rather than later. A simple assessment can often highlight a few straightforward changes that make a significant difference.
