October is a transitional month, darker evenings, falling leaves, damp mornings, and the first real bite of cold in the air. It’s also when many pests begin settling into places they shouldn’t, your home, business, or storage areas to wait out the colder months.
While spring and summer tend to bring more visible pest activity, autumn pests are often quieter, more persistent, and harder to spot until the damage is done.
Here’s what to look out for this month, and what to do if you notice the early warning signs.
Rodents: Nowhere to Hide Means Indoors
October marks the point when rodents move out of fields and gardens and begin searching for indoor shelter. Rats and mice don’t wait until winter, they start early, and they’ll take advantage of any opportunity to get inside.
You may not see them straight away, but the signs are there:
Droppings behind appliances or in lofts
Gnaw marks on packaging or cables
Scratching sounds in walls or ceilings (especially at night)
If you run a business, particularly in hospitality, food storage, or facilities management, even one rodent sighting can be a big issue.
Flies and Spiders: Seasonal Behaviour Shift
October also brings a change in insect behaviour. Cluster flies begin to gather in lofts and wall cavities, looking for places to hibernate. You might see groups of them on sun-facing windows or in roof voids — especially on warmer days.
Spiders are more noticeable this time of year too, particularly as mating season continues, drawing them into living spaces and offices in search of warmth and shelter.
Even wasps may still be active if their nests haven’t fully died off — and they can be more aggressive as their life cycle nears its end.
Damp, Leaves & Outdoor Shelter
With increased rainfall and leaves clogging gutters, October creates plenty of damp hiding spots that attract pests. Blocked drains, compost heaps, woodpiles, and clutter around buildings can quickly become harbourage areas for rodents and insects.
Check around your property, especially near doors, vents, pipework, and rooflines, for any signs of pest activity. Prevention now is much easier than control later.
What to Do if You Spot Signs of a Pest
Whether it’s scratching, droppings, damage, or something just doesn’t feel right, it’s important to act quickly. Waiting until the problem grows can make control more complicated and expensive — especially in colder months when pests are more determined to stay put.
Here’s what you can do:
Seal gaps around pipes, doors, vents and rooflines
Store food properly, including pet food, in sealed containers
Clear away garden waste and check woodpiles and outbuildings
Inspect attics, sheds, and basements regularly for signs of nesting
Call a professional if you spot droppings, unusual insect activity, or hear scratching
