May Pest Watch: Are Wasps on Your Radar?

May Pest Watch: Are Wasps on Your Radar?

May is when things really start to shift. Warmer days become more consistent, outdoor spaces come back into use, and pest activity increases across the board. While a range of insects begin to emerge at this time of year, one in particular deserves attention early, wasps.

May is often when we start seeing the first signs of wasp nest activity. And while it may seem early, what you do now can make a big difference to how manageable the situation is later in the summer.

Why May Is Important for Wasp Control

In early spring, queen wasps come out of hibernation and begin building new nests. By May, these nests are still relatively small, often no bigger than a golf ball or tennis ball, and usually hidden away in quieter areas of a property.

Common early nesting spots include:

  • Loft spaces
  • Sheds and garages
  • Under eaves and rooflines
  • Wall cavities
  • Garden structures and fences

At this stage, there’s usually only one wasp, the queen, building the nest and laying eggs. But this doesn’t last long.

As temperatures continue to rise, the first worker wasps hatch and begin expanding the nest. From that point on, activity increases quickly.

What Happens If You Leave It?

A nest that starts small in May can grow significantly over the coming weeks. By mid to late summer, it can contain thousands of wasps, all actively foraging for food and defending the nest.

This is when problems become much more noticeable:

  • Increased wasp activity around bins, food and drink
  • Wasps entering indoor spaces
  • Higher risk of stings, especially in busy areas
  • Disruption to outdoor seating or working environments

Dealing with a nest early is always simpler, safer, and more cost-effective than waiting until peak season.

Other Pests to Watch in May

While wasps are a key focus, May also brings increased activity from other pests:

Ants

You may start to see ant trails forming indoors as colonies become more active and search for food sources.

Flies

Warmer temperatures encourage fly breeding, particularly around waste areas, drains and kitchens.

Rodents

Rats and mice remain active and may begin moving between indoor and outdoor spaces as food sources increase.

What You Can Do Now

Taking a few simple steps can help reduce the risk of pest problems developing later in the season.

Check for Early Nesting Activity

Keep an eye on lofts, sheds, and rooflines for signs of wasps entering and leaving the same area.

Manage Waste Properly

Ensure bins are sealed and cleaned regularly to avoid attracting wasps and flies.

Seal Entry Points

Check for gaps around vents, windows, and doors where insects can enter.

Stay Aware

If you notice repeated activity in one location, it’s worth investigating early.

Don’t Try to Remove a Nest Yourself

Even a small nest can pose a risk if disturbed. Wasps can become defensive quickly, and without the right equipment and approach, it can lead to stings or further complications.

Professional treatment ensures the nest is dealt with safely and effectively.
